Foreign Trained Worker and Out-of-Province Worker Information
Are you a tradesperson from outside Canada or from another province/territory within Canada? Before working in Saskatchewan, you need to know the apprenticeship and trade certification requirements in our province.
Voluntary trades – most trades in Saskatchewan are “voluntary” trades, with the exception of those identified below. To work in a voluntary trade, you are not required to be a certified journeyperson or an apprentice.
Compulsory apprenticeship trades – there are four “compulsory” trades in Saskatchewan:
1. Electrician
2. Plumber
3. Refrigeration Mechanic
4. Sheet Metal Worker
To work in a compulsory trade, you must:
• Hold a Saskatchewan provincial journeyperson certificate, or
• hold an interprovincial “Red Seal” journeyperson certificate, or
• if you hold a provincial journeyperson certificate from another Canadian jurisdiction, you are encouraged to register with us; or
• register as an apprentice.
Hairstylist trade – in order to work in this trade, you must:
• be certified as an interprovincial “Red Seal” journeyperson, or
• obtain a Learner’s Certificate. A Learner’s Certificate from the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission permits you to work in the trade until you are eligible to challenge the journeyperson examination.
• Provincial journeyperson certificates from other Canadian jurisdictions may be considered. All out-of-country credential holders must obtain a Learner’s Certificate. In both cases, please contact the Commission for more information.
Note: several occupations, such as Gasfitter and Electrician, are subject to licensing requirements from other government agencies. These requirements must be complied with.
