NATIONAL AWARD RECOGNIZES SASKATCHEWAN APPRENTICESHIP ADVOCATE — June 7, 2010

The inaugural Darryl Cruickshank Memorial Award was presented today to Paul McLellan, CEO of Alliance Energy Group of Companies, at the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum's (CAF) 2010 Fifth National Conference, held in St. John's, Newfoundland, June 6-8, 2010. McLellan, a Red Seal Journeyperson Electrician certified in Saskatchewan, is the largest electrical contractor in the province.

SASKATCHEWAN YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM GROWS THROUGH GENEROUS INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTION — May 25, 2010

More companies and industry organizations are getting on side with the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry Scholarship Program that supports youth choosing careers in the skilled trades. Today, PCL Construction Management Inc. announced a $100,000 contribution to the scholarship fund.

GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FUNDING TO INCREASE APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES — May 21, 2010

More apprentices will receive training as a result of a funding increase of $1.95 million to the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC). This year's budget increase includes $400,000 for a targeted initiative to bolster Aboriginal participation and success in apprenticeship training in the province.

APPRENTICESHIP AND TRADE CERTIFICATION AMENDMENTS WILL BENEFIT THE LABOUR MARKET

Changes were announced to The Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Regulations, 2003 which will allow employers to hire additional employees to meet the needs of the growing economy and labour market.

Essential Skills

Having strong Essential Skills such as reading, writing, document use and thinking can help apprentices succeed in their training and in the workplace. A series of tools have been developed to support apprentices in understanding, assessing and improving their essential skills. These tools can be used independently or with the assistance of a tradesperson, trainer, employer, teacher or mentor.

2008-09 Centennial Merit Scholarship Winners - updated Feb 25/10

The 2008-09 Centennial Merit Scholarship Program Awards of $250 each were awarded to over 145 Saskatchewan apprentices for achieving the highest marks on their apprenticeship level examinations in their designated trades.

SASKATCHEWAN YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED — December 17, 2009

A new scholarship program was announced today to encourage high school graduates to enter productive careers in the skilled trades. Forty scholarships worth $1,000 each will be awarded every June to selected, eligible high school graduates who have completed the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Program.

Saskatchewan Wage Survey, 2009

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour (AEEL) contracted Insightrix Research Inc. to undertake a provincial wage survey of employers in Saskatchewan in 2009.  The Saskatchewan Wage Survey, 2009 provides current wage information on 244 occupations collected from 1,100 employers, representing nearly 90,000 employees in the province.  Occupational wage data is also provided on a regional basis for Regina, Saskatoon, and the rest of the province.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF NEW JOURNEYPERSONS RECOGNIZED — October 23, 2009

Thirty-one completing apprentices newly certified as journeypersons will receive an award for their outstanding achievement in the skilled trades. They are the top achievers from among the more than 1,200 new journeypersons certified in the 47 trades in Saskatchewan between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

RECENT STUDY PROVES APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING WORKS FOR EMPLOYERS!

OTTAWA – July 6, 2009 - The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum-Forum canadien sur l’apprentissage (CAF-FCA) has completed a follow-up study, “It pays to hire an apprentice: Calculating the Return on Training Investment for Employers in Canada,” and the results are positive for employers!
